S.W.A.T.

S.W.A.T.
Description: Television director/actor Clark Johnson makes an impressive feature-film debut with S.W.A.T. Inspired by the 1970s show of the same name, S.W.A.T. is set in modern day Los Angeles. Recently demoted officer Jim Street (Colin Farrell) gets a chance to redeem himself when aging veteran Hondo (Samuel L. Jackson) is put in control of a new team. Joining Jim are Deke Kay (LL Cool J), Michael Boxer (Brian Van Holt), T.J. McCabe (Josh Charles), and Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez), all outcasts in their own right. But after an intense training period, the team is ready to hit the streets. Their first big assignment involves one of the world’s most dangerous criminals, Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez), who makes an on-camera declaration that he’ll give $100 million to whoever breaks him out of jail. Pretty soon, everyone’s trying to get a piece of the action, including Jim’s former partner, Brian Gamble (Jeremy Renner), who uses his own S.W.A.T. team experience to plot the escape of a lifetime. It’s up to Hondo and Jim to outsmart the bad guys and make sure that Alex is safely transported to a federal penitentiary. S.W.A.T. is an entertaining adventure made all the more engaging because of the way Johnson concerns himself equally with the quality of the film’s drama and its action. Reviews Uncut 01/01/2004 “Johnson has an impeccable cop show pedigree…”Total Film 01/01/2004 “[A]ction-packed.”Chicago Sun-Times 12/30/2004 “[T]his one has a plot and characters, dialogue and plausibility, and physical feats that an actual cop might really almost be able to perform.”Los Angeles Times 01/01/2004 “[The] cast — including Farrell, Jackson, LL Cool J, Olivier Martinez and Michelle Rodriguez — seems to be enjoying itself.”Entertainment Weekly 08/15/2003 “…The new-millennium S.W.A.T. provides entertainment quite apart from the diversion of flashy action sequences…”

Without A Paddle

Without A Paddle
Description: In Steven Brill’s WITHOUT A PADDLE, three friends embark on a hilariously dangerous adventure through the woods of the Pacific Northwest. When their childhood friend Billy dies, 30-year-old buddies Dan (Seth Green), Tom (Dax Shepard), and Jerry (Matthew Lillard) return home to pay their respects. While there, they unearth a map that Billy left behind, which may or may not lead to a hidden treasure. Dan is a germ-phobic doctor who would rather spend his time anywhere but in the wilderness, but the recently dumped Jerry and down-on-his-luck Tom are intent on fulfilling their friend’s lifelong dream; and so begins the trio’s journey. It isn’t long before things begin to spiral out of control. Starting with a gigantic bear that mistakes Dan for one of its own, the guys are also on the run from two pot-growing maniacs (Ethan Suplee, Abraham Benrubi) who are looking for revenge after their marijuana farm is burned to a crisp. Of course, what would a wilderness expedition be without raging rapids, a towering waterfall, beautiful (but hairy) hippy chicks, and an encounter with a menacing mountain man (Burt Reynolds)? Brill’s madcap adventure gleefully references DELIVERANCE and 1980s pop culture, and features spot-on performances from Green, Lillard, and Shepard. Reviews Uncut 01/01/2005 “[W] hen in full swing it’s bracing fun…. One for the guilty pleasure file.ƒ?? Entertainments Weekly 09/03/2004 ƒ?oThere are some genuinely clever moments of physical comedy…”

Coach Carter

Coach Carter
Description: In the tradition of LEAN ON ME and DANGEROUS MINDS comes COACH CARTER, an inspirational drama starring Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson portrays real-life figure Ken Carter, who graduated from California’s Richmond High only to return there years later, in 1999, and take over as head coach of the boys’ basketball team. Unfortunately, the troubled school he remembered as a teenager is an even more insufferable place in his adulthood. Determined to make a change in his players’ lives, Carter makes each young man sign a contract that ensures he will maintain a 2.3 GPA, attend every class, and wear a jacket and tie on game day. Of course, the players reject the contract at first, but when they realize that they don’t have any other choice, they give in. And when it appears that their tough-as-nails coach is actually turning them into winners on the court, they embrace their coach’s philosophy even further. But when Coach Carter receives the incomprehensibly awful progress reports of his players, he does the unthinkable: he benches the entire team. Directed by Thomas Carter (SAVE THE LAST DANCE), COACH CARTER is a sensitive drama that features an impassioned performance by Jackson, as well as the impressive young cast (most notably Rob Brown, Rick Gonzalez, and Robert Ri’Chard). Reviews Movieline’s Hollywood Life 07/01/2005 “[Jackson's] cool factor never falters.”Premiere 07/01/2005 “[With] a combination of kinetic scenes on the court and meaningful, well-acted ones off it.”Sight and Sound 03/01/2005 “The basketball scenes are filmed with infectious energy….COACH CARTER emerges as an entertaining and unexpectedly thought-provoking American sports movie.”Uncut 03/01/2005 “[A] thoughtful sports movie….COACH CARTER is daringly truthful.”New York Times 01/14/2005 “Mr. Jackson acts with his usual steely authority….Mr. Gonzalez and Mr. Brown are especially strong…”Entertainment Weekly 01/21/2005 “Jackson rules the movie with his joyful inflections…”

The Replacement Killers

The Replacement Killers
Description: Versatile Hong Kong box office giant Chow Yun-Fat makes a Hollywood splash as a John Lee, Chinese hitman beholden to drug kingpin Mr. Wei (Hong Kong stalwart Ken Tsang, in an interesting reversal of his “crusty cop” persona). The good news is that Lee’s free after one hit; the bad news is that Wei wants revenge on a cop who killed his son–by killing the cop’s son. Lee decides to run rather than kill the boy, and Wei doesn’t take kindly to the betrayal. Tough-talking passport forger Meg Coburn (Mira Sorvino) creates a new identity for Lee, but that’s of little help when they must face Wei’s army of “replacement killers.” First-timer Fuqua provides eye-candy visuals and plenty of action set pieces. John Woo executive produced. Reviews Chicago Sun-Times 02/26/1998 “…It’s a high-gloss version of a Hong Kong action picture….It’s done with a tilt and a zoom….Cool and self-assured…”Premiere 02/01/1998 “…As many stateside viewers get their first glimpse of Hong Kong action icon Chow, they’re sure to be transfixed by [his] sexy combination of vulnerability and higher purpose…”Box Office 03/01/1998 “…THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS is a dazzlingly slick actioner that should not only thrill Chow’s many devoted fans, but win him legions of new admirers as well…”New York Times 02/06/1998 “…A sleek piece of filmmaking….[With] a mood that is dreamlike and almost lulling…”Sight and Sound 06/01/1998 “…[Sorvino] attacks her role with skill. She never smiles until the final scene, but has stolen the show long before…”Rolling Stone 02/19/1998 “…Chow Yun-Fat is a legend in the making…”

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters
Description: When Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murrary) and his Columbia University colleagues (Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson) are kicked out of their prestigious academic posts, they start a private practice as professional ghost-catchers. Although the three parascientists are idle for awhile, their television advertisements finally pay off when beautiful Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) contracts them. It seems her apartment has become the entryway for ghastly ghosts and goofy ghouls hellbent on terrorizing New York City. Soon they’re going to her rescue, trying to rid the city of the slimy creatures. GHOSTBUSTERS hit US screens in June of 1984 and went on to become one of the most successful comedy films of all time, spawning a sequel and a popular animated series. Reviews Entertainment Weekly 08/05/2005 “What turned GHOSTBUSTERS into a classic was director Ivan Reitman’s ability to stir genuine ghoulish scares into the clever dialogue and funny bits.”Premiere 12/01/2004 “GHOSTBUSTERS is still a rounded, rousing entertainment.”Variety 06/06/1984 “…It’s Murray’s picture, as the popular comedian deadpans, ad libs and does an endearing array of physical schtick….Weaver is deliciously sexy…”

Steamboy

Steamboy
Description: Katsuhiro Otomo, the master Japanese anime director behind the international success AKIRA, scores again with STEAMBOY, the inventive story of a family of inventors from Manchester, England, that gets ripped apart by greed, pride, and power. Ray Steam (voice of Anne Suzuki) is a young boy following in the footsteps of his father, Eddy (Masane Tsukayama), and grandfather, Lloyd (Katsuo Nakamura), scientists dedicated to advancing technology through the use of steam. When Lloyd invents a steam ball that has unheard-of possibilities, everyone wants it–world leaders, wealthy industrialists, and even the government–but most of them want it for evil purposes. And so it is up to Ray to protect the fate of the earth while also choosing between his father and grandfather. The background paintings and 3-D CGI animation are gorgeous, creating a gray-and-white palette of gear-driven machines that melds perfectly with the story, which takes the main characters to a major science exhibition in Victorian-era London. In addition to the original subtitled Japanese version, there is an English-language edition featuring the voices of Anna Paquin, Alfred Molina, and Patrick Stewart. STEAMBOY is an animated gem both kids and adults can enjoy. Reviews Premiere 09/01/2005 “The setting and winsomeness of the teen protagonists suggest Otomo paying homage to Miyazaki, but the ideological bent and propulsive action here are pure Otomo.”Entertainment Weekly 04/01/2005 “It’s nifty to behold…”Los Angeles Times 03/18/2005 “[With] lush, painterly backgrounds and some virtuoso sequences…”
